Society Video Introduction

I am proud to present this film to you as an illustration of the work and direction of Hampshire Autistic Society. The Society, having been formed by parents over 40 years ago, has now grown into the leading autism service provider in Hampshire. The Society's range of services include support at diagnosis, through the family support and to our specialist school and associated boarding establishments. Over the past few years the Society has strengthened and developed these services whilst recognising that with transition being critical to our students and adult service users we need to ensure that the further education and adult services are person centred and allow for individuals to move from service to service as their needs dictate. The Society's adult services now include Domiciliary Support, Supported Living, Residential Homes and a Day Service. I hope that you enjoy the film and please open the door of communication with Hampshire Autistic Society.

Government Announces a Strategy Consultation

As you are aware, the Government instigated a consultation process on the Autism Strategy. This is the first time that the Government has sought to develop a strategic approach for people with autism and it was a critical opportunity for everybody connected to autism to express their views and to take the opportunity to help shape the strategic framework that the Government will operate in.

Following consultation with staff, service users and parents, please find below a link to the Society's response to the Governments consultation on the adult autism strategy for your information.

Autism Bill

Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Cheryl Gillan MP, introduced the Autism Bill to the House of Commons on 21st January 2009. It built on the important work that the Government has done to improve services for children and adults with autism in the last few years as well as recent Ten Minute Rule Bills introduced by Lee Scott MP and Angela Browning MP.

The Bill, as introduced, made requirements of local authorities and their partners to take a strategic approach to meeting the current and future needs of children and adults with autism in their area. In terms of the adult clauses, the Bill has also gone through quite a metamorphosis. The new Bill, as amended by Government, puts a duty on the Secretary of State to introduce an Adult Autism Strategy for improving outcomes for adults with autism, accompanied by statutory guidance for local authorities and NHS bodies. This Strategy is currently being consulted on.

If passed, the Bill would be a catalyst for huge progress in meeting the needs of the country's adults with autism. The new clause is completely in the spirit of the original Bill and in many instances goes well beyond what was covered in the original. The statutory guidance covers all the crucial parts - including access to diagnosis, needs assessments, transition planning, strategic planning of support services for adults with autism, and local partnership and cooperation.

Hampshire Autistic Society is delighted with the approach taken by the Government on this issue as well as the support received for this Bill from all sides of the house, and warmly welcomes the Bill as amended. The truly cross party spirit of this Bill is illustrated by Baroness Pitkeathley agreeing to take it forward in the House of Lords for its third, and final, reading in October 2009.
