Bassett
House is a residential education unit for 16-19 year
olds. We offer
up to 52-week accommodation for five students. We specialise
in the support and education of students who have special
educational needs issued by their Local Education Authority
and are diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum.
As with all of the Society's services, Bassett House employs experienced professional practitioners including teachers, teaching assistants and residential support / education staff. We also benefit from the Society's
Speech and Language Therapist as well as behavioural
and communication experts.
The learning is extended outside education hours, as
we offer a 24-hour waking day curriculum. This is focused
around independent living skills, socialisation, and
community based activities. All these areas are focused
on a person centred philosophy, where we encourage
the students to make valuable choices about their lives.
We offer a structured, balanced and broad curriculum,
which is determined by the needs of each individual
student. Contact with the community is an important
component of a learner's development; we undertake regular
trips and activities to support and reinforce learning.
Our
learners engage in offsite programmes including visiting
the QE2 Activity Centre undertaking a range of outdoor
pursuits.
A huge emphasis is placed on delivering essential skills
such as Numeracy, Literacy and ICT in a functional and
innovative way e.g. students being involved in the weekly
shopping. Using the Internet to plan and book their chosen
activities out in the community. Awareness and budgeting
of individual students' money as well as classroom based
lessons, under the guidance of the Bassett House Teacher.
All aspects of community living are covered; the location
of Bassett House makes it ideal to develop student's
skills in accessing public transport there are several
local shops and larger supermarkets situated in close
proximity, the common is also nearby providing a multitude
of activities including nature walks, sports or relaxation.
Physical fitness and healthy living are covered by
supporting students to make healthy choices for independent
meals and to advocate a balanced diet; students are
encouraged to be as independent as possible with regard
to the preparation of their meals. A broad range of
sporting activities are offered these include; Swimming,
Gym, Ice Skating, Golf, Roller Blading, Cycling and
Scooter, Orienteering, Trampolining and Horse Riding.
Our aim is to provide experiences and teach skills
that will enable students to develop as much independence
as possible and prepare then to live satisfying and
fulfilling lives within their community. We have high
expectations of our students and are committed to helping
individuals reach their full potential. |
