Self - Help Support Groups
The Hampshire Autistic Society liaises with support groups in Aldershot, Alton, Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth and Southampton and elsewhere in the County.
The activities of these groups varies. Some hold regular meetings while others simply offer a contact and information point.
For further information please contact the Outreach Officer.
Tel: 023 8063 3951, e-mail: carole.hiorns@has.org.uk
Small group parent courses are run for parents of
children on or suspected to be on the autistic spectrum.
This is to give parents information about autism
and positive strategies which may help with the management
of their children.
All these services are provided free of charge, but a small donation towards the work of the Society would be greatly appreciated.

The Alert Card Is Coming!
Research has shown that people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are seven times more likely to have contact with the Criminal Justice System than someone not on the spectrum (Curry, et al, 1993).
Hampshire Autistic Society, in partnership with Hampshire Police, will launch the Alert Card Project on 7th October 2008. The aim of the Alert Card is to support people with ASD should they find themselves in any type of contact with the Police. The card should be carried at all times and shown to an Officer in the case of an incident or situation. The Police would be able to support the person in an appropriate manner and contact a named person listed on the back of the card to assist with supporting the person during their time in Police care.
Further information will be available on this website leading up to the launch date. If you require further information on the Alert Card, or any other information, please contact the Outreach Department on 023
8063 3951.

To whom it may concern
May I introduce myself; my name is Neil and I am the father
of a six-year-old daughter with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. I am in the process of writing about her but not through the usual narrative of how my family have coped with her condition or offering any academic, scientific solutions.
Instead, I want to make contact with other fathers whose offspring are Autistic, to write letters based on the premise, "If I had a magic wand, I would..." and put them together in book form.
I have sent out a proposal to Jessica Kingsley Publishers, with this idea and am awaiting their response. And have the backing of The National Autistic Society, the Kent Autistic Trust and one of leading experts in the field, Tony Attwood (his enthusiastic PA, at least!).
The letters can be honest, explaining you'll never change the child; they can be frank, wanting to alter only some parts or all parts, contain humorous anecdotes, doodles, poems, scribbles, anything that another father might relate to, to garner inspiration and a small nugget of relief. Or, even show the wishes of the child. Fathers come across as having very little escape from the rigours of caring for disabled children.
As Autism does not only affect laymen, I will be doing my utmost to contact male celebrities and anyone, financially successful, whose money and privilege do not prevent them experiencing the same problems as other fathers.
Some of the proceeds for the book are earmarked for The Kent Autistic Trust and The Fathers Club in Kent, a group offering advice to fathers of Autistic children.
Yours truly.
