1. What should I do?
- If you are concerned that your child/relative is on the autistic spectrum, contact your GP.
- Contact our Outreach Officer on 02380 633951 and if possible visit our lending library at Hope Lodge School, 22 MIddanbury Lane, Southampton
- When visiting your doctor if possible take along notes along with you of instances which are giving you cause for concern.
- You can request to be referred to a paediatrician or psychiatrist.
- If you are not satisfied with your local professionals you are entitled to a second opinion. Agree this with your GP.
- Ask the teacher, health visitor or social worker if they have any concerns, if they have ask them to put it in writing for you to present to the professional.
- If necessary you may be invited to attend an assessment meeting, if you are alone you may take someone with you to this meeting.
- Following an assessment if you still have further questions contact our Outreach Officer who may be able to offer further help on 02380 633951.
2. How can I get help?
- Talking to other parents they will know who to contact in your area.
- Visiting the Society's lending library at Hope Lodge School, Southampton.
- Your GP should be able to direct you to help.
- Speak to teachers, health visitors and social workers.
- If you are experiening problems with education then contact Parent Partnership: Hampshire on 01962 845 870.
- For respite care speak to a social worker.
- You may be eligible for a Disability Living Allowance. Phone your local benefits office for the forms. Help to complete the forms can be found on www.? Or contact our Outreach Officer on 02380 633951.
- Enquire about educational establishments that have facilities suitable for your child. If possible visit the establishments. Be prepared to make lists of why you have chosen a specific establishment, as you may have to present these reasons if they vary from those being advised by the authorities.
- Register your child with Social services (a small form to fill in) in order to make them aware that you may need help in the future.
- Telephone 02380 633951 to chat or request a home visit if you need to talk things through with someone.
3. Where can I get help?
- Your local Autistic Society for books and information.
- If the child is under school age find out about an early intervention programme.
- Books - Read as much as you can about the disability. Knowledge can help you understand the mind of the person living with the disability.
- Your local support groups - parents will know who to contact in the area.
- Join the society which will keep you up to date of what is going on in your area.
