Person Centred Planning is a way of helping people who want to make changes in their life. It is an empowering approach to helping people plan their future and organise the support and services they need.

Person Centred Planning puts the ‘person’ at the centre of the planning process and shifts power to them. It provides an effective way to listen and respond to people by identifying their gifts, interests and desires. This makes it different from traditional approaches to assessment and individual planning.

Person Centred Planning is a way to help people think about what they want or need out of life and plan how to get it. The person is key to the planning process. The planning process helps to get others who care about the individual to help in the planning and doing.

Person Centred Planning is based on an explicit set of beliefs and values concerning people with disabilities, services and communities. At the heart of all the planning approaches is the belief that every single individual has their own life to lead, a life that is right for them.

Person Centred Planning enables people to
lead ordinary lives at ordinary times.

Hampshire Autistic Society is committed to ensuring that the people who access their service are given the tools to have choice and control over their lives. Whether that be within the educational services, residentially or when spending time at Day Services or Outreach Services. Hampshire Autistic Society measures outcomes not only against the ‘valuing people’ White Paper, but has recently taken part in a Quality Network review through BILD (British Institute of Learning Disabilities) to ensure that people are able to have input into how their service provides for them.

Whilst working in post as Person Centred Planning Co-ordinator I have been privileged to be able to offer support as a facilitator to two pilot groups within the Society. I have also devised and presented autism specific Person Centred Training, both at breadth and depth level, and am currently part of a group who are looking at Autism specific training that could be shared with other agencies, as the benefits of joint working have been greatly recognised. I have been heavily involved with devising a training pack to support service user involvement.

I have worked closely with outside Agencies such as Social Services, County and City Councils, Connexions and Advocacy Groups around issues such as transition, review processes and communication to ensure that young people and service users are empowered to have choice and control.
