Hope Lodge SchoolHope Lodge School

Hope Lodge School is an independent special needs school for students aged 5-19 with a primary diagnosis of autism whose educational needs cannot adequately be met in mainstream schools.

Opened in 1971, by parents of children with autism and Asperger Syndrome, the school was designed around the needs of students by the parents themselves. The school offers day, weekly, termly and 52-week boarding places to children with all degrees of autism and Asperger Syndrome.

The school now operates on five sites:

  • The main school, for 5 -16 year olds in Bitterne Park, is spacious with a large, secure and well-equipped playground and good facilities including a Library, Multi-sensory and Therapy Room and Teaching Kitchen.
  • Aspin House and the Post 16 College Campus (comprising Bassett House, Armstrong House and Community Resource Centre) provide Post 16 education.

So what is so special?

Children playingOur main aim is the education of the students in our charge, in a positive, secure and caring environment.  The needs of the individual are paramount and thanks to a high teacher/student ratio, can be planned and catered for.  Class sizes vary from 6-8 students.  Each class has a Teacher with special educational needs experience and knowledge and understanding of autism and a number of Teaching Assistants.  It is therefore possible to offer students more individual attention and provide programmes of study tailored to meet the particular needs of the individual.

Person Centred Approaches with Autism

‘Staff know their students very well and this enables them to be calm and develop good behaviour. Parents and Carers are overwhelmingly positive about the education and care provided by the school for their children’ (Ofsted report, 2009)
