Autism Awareness

This course is recommended for organisations that are interested in finding out about how people with autism/Aspergers Syndrome interpret the world and develop strategies to support themselves. This course will provide a general insight into the facts regarding autism/Asperger Syndrome; the Triad of Impairment and its effects; behaviours that are perceived as challenging and how those behaviours are a form of communication and literal interpretation and communication strategies that may support individuals. This is a fun and interactive course which will also provide participants with the opportunity to discuss ideas on how to support people with autism/Asperger Syndrome within society.

This training is delivered by two qualified and experienced trainers with in-depth knowledge of autism, Asperger Syndrome, communication and behaviour.

Makaton Taster

This short course is recommended for organisations who are interested in finding out about Makaton with a view to attending a Foundation course at a later date.

This course will provide a general insight into what Makaton is and who uses it. It provides participants with the opportunity to learn approximately 30 signs and symbols which are adapted to suit the organisation’s specific requirements. This is a fun and interactive session which also provides participants with the opportunity to discuss ideas on how to use Makaton within their work environment. Participants will receive handouts covering the vocabulary they have learned and general information regarding further Makaton training.

This training is delivered by two qualified and experienced regional Makaton tutors.

Makaton Foundation

This course is delivered over two days. It will provide training to develop the necessary skills to become a competent and confident user of both Makaton signs and symbols. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding through a mixture of practical sessions and short lectures. The practical sessions include the teaching of Stages 1-4 and the additional vocabulary from the Makaton core vocabulary. The lectures cover research into sign use, symbol design themes, the use and purpose of Makaton and an overview of alternative systems of communication. Time is made for group discussion and problem solving.

Makaton Enhancement

This course is delivered over three days. It will provide training to further develop the skills required to become a competent and confident user of both Makaton signs and symbols. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding through a mixture of practical sessions and short lectures. The practical sessions include the teaching of Stages 5-8 and the additional vocabulary from the Makaton core vocabulary.

Person Centred Planning and Approaches

This course is recommended for organisations that are interested in finding out about the needs and wishes of their service users and the processes needed to support them to plan all aspects of their lives. The course will provide a general insight into what Person Centred Planning and Approaches is and who uses it. It will provide participants with the opportunity to learn about internationally recognised tools of planning. The course also looks at the additional support people with autism may need when planning. This is a fun and interactive course which also provides participants with the opportunity to discuss ideas on how to implement Person Centred Planning tools and Approaches within their work environment.
