Jon and Matthew
Chessel Avenue is located in the busy village of Bitterne with easy access to a shopping centre, swimming pool, shops and library. It provides 24 hour support for young adults with autism each of whom have their own tenancy agreement with Birnbeck Housing Association. The property comprises of four bedrooms, three bathrooms, communal lounge, dining room, shared kitchen, laundry facilities, and a large garden in which the young adults have a trampoline to have fun on and exercise.

Micasa is located in Shirley in a quiet residential street and accommodates 4 people each of whom hold their own tenancy agreement with Hyde Housing Association. The facilities are very similar to Chessel Avenue except that this property has a beautiful conservatory on the back face of the property which provides a very peaceful space for the people living there to relax in.

All of the support provided is delivered using a person centred approach and our aim is to ensure that we assist people living in these properties to gain their version of independence through promoting choice, empowerment, and inclusion. As they learn new skills we see them grow in confidence enabling them to grasp opportunities and move forward with their lives. Eventually they may well decide they want to move on to more independent accommodation.

We support people to structure their week in a meaningful way and this includes supporting them to undertake a range of activities such as gaining access to College courses, pursuing an interest they may have, and linking in with external agencies to promote work experience placements and undertake voluntary jobs. Other activities they enjoy may include things like horse-riding, swimming, bowling, attending the local gym, or going to the cinema.

When it comes to managing their home environment we support them to develop invaluable daily living skills such as budgeting, shopping, cooking and cleaning, alongside teaching ways of keeping their home safe and secure.

Person Centred Quality Audit

At the end of 2009 we undertook a Person Centred Quality Audit of the services we provide at Mi Casa. This audit tool has been developed by the Hampshire Autistic Society to obtain and maintain confidence that the services it provides are centred around the individual, are autism focussed and meet individual needs. It has been designed to check how well individuals using the Hampshire Autistic Society services are supported to achieve their full potential and forms part of the Society's overall performance management strategy and complements the regulatory audits of services by CQC and Ofsted.

"The overall outcome of the audit confirmed that residents living in Mi Casa are well supported to reach their desired goals and that this is achieved through the active use of person centred planning. There are however some difficulties around residents understanding of the tenancy agreement and their responsibilities within it. Residents are being well supported to undertake a range of activities of their own choosing, consider risks and be healthy and safe, develop their independent living skills, sustain positive relationships with their landlord and ensure Mi Casa is kept clean and well maintained."
